Tree Trimming & Felling

Tree Trimming & Felling, Planned and Done Safely

Canopy management, clearance work and removal of unstable trees for estates and commercial sites across Gauteng — every job risk-assessed first, because tree work near buildings and power lines leaves no room for improvising.

When does a tree need to be trimmed or removed?

A tree needs attention when it threatens people, structures or services — branches over roofs and walkways, roots lifting paving or entering drains, canopies fouling power lines, or visible instability such as lean, splitting or dieback. Trimming resolves most of these. Removal is for trees that are dead, structurally unsound, or too close to a structure to make safe. Highveld Group assesses and carries out both across Gauteng.

Scope of work

Tree work we carry out

Tree work in an occupied estate is a controlled operation, not a chainsaw and a ladder. Every one of these starts with an assessment of what is above, below and around the tree.

  • Trimming & canopy management

Crown thinning, reduction and lifting to reduce wind load, restore light and clear structures — cut at the right points so the tree recovers properly.

  • Hazardous tree removal

Sectional dismantling of dead, leaning or structurally compromised trees where a straight fell is not safe or not possible.

  • Clearance from buildings & power lines

Clearing canopies back from roofs, gutters, boundary walls, roads and overhead services — including sightline clearance on road corridors.

  • Storm damage response

Clearing fallen and hung-up trees after Highveld storms, restoring access routes and making unstable remains safe.

  • Alien & invasive vegetation control

Removal and ongoing control of invasive species that spread aggressively through estate boundaries, servitudes and open ground — then held in check by regular grounds maintenance.

  • Stump treatment & site clearing

Stumps ground down or chemically treated to stop regrowth, and all cut material removed so the area is usable again, ready for industrial grass cutting on larger sites.

How it works

How we plan and execute tree work

  1. Assess the tree and its surroundings

Condition, lean, decay, root zone, and what sits within falling distance — roofs, walls, vehicles, services and walkways.

  2. Decide trimming or removal, honestly

Many trees flagged for removal only need proper reduction. We will say so, because unnecessary removal costs you more and takes decades to replace.

  3. Plan access, drop zones and isolation

How equipment gets in, where sections come down, which routes close, and whether services need to be isolated before we start.

  4. Execute and clear the site

Controlled cutting, then all timber and brush removed. The measure of a good tree job is that the next morning you cannot tell we were there.

Why Highveld

Why tree work is worth doing properly

Tree work has the highest consequence of anything we do. A misjudged cut takes out a roof, a wall or a person — and it happens in seconds, with no chance to correct it.

Questions

Tree trimming and felling FAQs

Do I need permission to remove a tree in South Africa?

Often, yes. Species listed as protected under the National Forests Act may not be cut or removed without a licence from the national department, and many municipalities have their own tree bylaws, particularly for street trees and trees on municipal verges. Estates and body corporates usually have internal rules on top of that. We will flag when we believe a permit is likely to be required, but confirming and obtaining it remains the property owner’s responsibility — and it is worth checking before work is booked, not after.

How much does tree felling cost?

It varies widely, and anyone quoting a flat price without seeing the tree is guessing. Cost is driven by the size and species, how close it is to structures and services, whether it can be felled whole or has to be dismantled in sections, machine access, and how much material has to be removed. We price after assessing the tree.

Do you remove the stump as well?

Stump removal is quoted separately because it is genuinely optional. Stumps can be ground down below surface level, chemically treated to prevent regrowth, or left. If the area is to be paved, planted or mown, grinding is usually worth doing.

Do you clear away the branches and timber?

Yes, removal of all cut material is included unless you ask us to leave timber on site. Leaving a property covered in brush is a common complaint about tree contractors and it is not how we finish a job.

Can you work near power lines?

We regularly clear canopies back from overhead services, with the approach planned in advance. Where work falls inside the safe approach distance of live lines, that requires isolation arranged with the supply authority — we will tell you when that is the case rather than working around a live line.

Is trimming always better than removing a tree?

Not always, but more often than people assume. Proper crown reduction or thinning resolves most clearance and wind-load problems while keeping the tree. Removal is the right answer when a tree is dead, structurally unsound, or so close to a structure that no amount of trimming makes it safe.

Can you respond to storm damage?

Yes. Fallen and hung-up trees after Highveld summer storms are a regular call-out. Hung-up trees in particular should not be approached by general maintenance staff — they carry stored tension and are the cause of many serious injuries.

Which areas do you service?

We are based in Founders Hill, Gauteng, and work across Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and the wider Gauteng region.
