What is structural steel and plate work?
Structural steel is the load-carrying steelwork in a structure — columns, beams, frames and support members. Plate work is the cutting, forming and welding of steel plate into fabricated components such as platforms, brackets, chutes and covers. Highveld Group fabricates both in the shop and installs on site for estates, commercial property and infrastructure projects across Gauteng.

What we fabricate and install
Every steel component has a job to do — carry a load, provide access, or protect something. We establish that first, because it determines the section sizes, the connections and the finish.
Structural steel & support frames
Columns, beams, portal sections and support frameworks fabricated and erected to carry real loads, not just to look substantial.
Custom plate work
Steel plate cut, formed and welded into brackets, covers, chutes, bases and one-off components made to your dimensions.
Staircases, platforms & walkways
Access steelwork with correct rise, going and clearances — including grating, chequer plate and landings for plant and rooftop access.
Handrails, balustrades & safety structures
Handrails, balustrades, edge protection and guarding built to resist the loads they are actually there to resist.

From site measure to installed steel
Site measure and survey
We measure the actual opening, level or connection point rather than working off assumed dimensions. Existing buildings are rarely square, and steel does not forgive that.
Drawings and sign-off
Fabrication drawings so you can see what you are getting — sections, connections, finishes and fixings — before any steel is cut.
Shop fabrication to tolerance
Cut, formed and welded in controlled conditions with proper tolerances and clean finishing, which is what makes installation quick instead of a day of grinding.
Install, finish and protect
Installed on site, connections made good, and the specified corrosion protection applied so the steel lasts in an outdoor Highveld environment.

Structural steel and fabrication FAQs
Do you work from supplied drawings or produce your own?
Both. If you have engineer-issued drawings we fabricate to them. If you do not, we can work from a site measure and produce fabrication drawings for your approval. Where a component is structurally critical, we will tell you plainly that it needs engineer sign-off rather than proceeding on our own judgement.
Do you fabricate off site or on site?
Fabrication happens in the shop wherever possible, because controlled conditions produce better tolerances, better welds and better finishing. Site work is limited to installation, connections and making good, which keeps disruption and hot work on your property to a minimum.
What corrosion protection do you apply?
It depends on exposure. Options run from a prepared and painted system through to hot-dip galvanising for steelwork that lives permanently outdoors or in a wet environment. We recommend based on where the steel is going, because under-specifying the coating is the fastest way to lose an otherwise good installation.
Can you match into or extend existing steelwork?
Yes. Matching into existing structures is routine work for us — extending walkways, replacing corroded sections, adding landings. We measure the existing steel and confirm section sizes rather than assuming the original drawings still reflect what is actually there.
Do you handle installation as well as fabrication?
Yes, and we would encourage it. When one contractor fabricates and installs, there is no argument about whether a fit problem originated in the shop or on site. It also means the concrete and masonry interfaces can be handled by our own civil and concrete teams.
Can you repair a gate or handrail rather than replace it?
Often, yes. Where the base steel is sound and the problem is localised corrosion, a failed weld or a damaged section, repair is usually the better value. Where the section has lost significant material, we will say so — repairing badly corroded structural steel is false economy.
How is fabrication work priced?
On scope: the steel mass, the complexity of the fabrication, the finish specified and the installation access. A straightforward handrail and a rooftop access platform are very different jobs even at similar lengths, so we quote after the measure.

We are based in Founders Hill, Gauteng, and work across Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and the wider Gauteng region, with regional projects considered where the scope justifies it.
